Common questions
What people ask about pipe culverts.
Five questions we answer most weeks. If yours is not here, ring the yard.
What standard do your pipe culverts meet? +
BS 5911-1:2002+A2:2010 — precast concrete pipes and ancillary products, with strength class 120 to suit HB44.5 highways loading. Our pipes are manufactured under factory production control to BS EN 13369. Joints are rebated with flexible elastomeric seals to BS EN 681-1 — watertight to 0.5 bar test pressure on completion.
What loading do they take? +
Class 120 (the standard for adoptable highway use) carries the full HB44.5 load envelope at 1.2m cover (about 3ft 11in), dropping to a minimum 600mm cover (2ft) under DMRB CD 526. For Network Rail crossings we supply to the higher Class 180 strength on request, with end-bearing reinforcement and the joint detail signed off by your CAT III check engineer.
What sizes do you cast? +
Catalogue range is 300mm to 1800mm internal diameter (1ft to 5ft 11in) in 2.5m effective lengths (8ft 2in). Larger diameters (2100mm/6ft 11in and 2400mm/7ft 10in) and bespoke headwalls, bends and junctions are quoted on application. We also supply matching precast headwalls, wingwalls and grilles to complete the run — see our headwalls page.
What is the lead time? +
Catalogue diameters up to 900mm are typically 2 to 3 weeks ex-yard. Larger 1200mm-plus and bespoke runs sit at 4 to 6 weeks depending on programme. Highways and rail orders are scheduled around possession dates — give us the works programme early and we will batch-cast to your delivery slots.
Do you supply the headwall and grille? +
Yes — we cast precast inlet and outlet headwalls, splayed wingwalls, trash screens and otter-friendly grille frames to match the pipe diameter. All to Environment Agency and Highways England standard details. We can also supply the granular bedding spec and joint lubricant — talk to the yard for a complete package.
