What's a V-section sand-slurry channel?

What's a V-section sand-slurry channel? A precast slurry channel with a "V" cross-section — wide at the top, narrow at the base. The geometry keeps flow moving so sand bedding never settles out and blocks the channel. WCCP's range pairs with 3 m (9'10") diagonal slats and runs at 2% fall.

V-section precast concrete sand-slurry channels, 1180 × 1180 × 2950mm (3'10" × 3'10" × 9'8") (shallow variant 600 × 1180 × 2950mm / 2'0" × 3'10" × 9'8"), cast to BS EN 14844 and BS 8500-1:2023 in C40/50 sulphate-resisting concrete. Why a V section instead of a flat-bottomed channel? +

Sand is the enemy of a flat-bottomed slurry channel — it settles in the corners, the slurry crusts on top, and within a season you have a silt problem that needs digging out. The V profile narrows at the base so the cross-sectional flow stays high even at low volumes, sand is carried along by the slurry instead of dropping out, and self-cleaning continues. It is the standard recommendation for sand-bedded dairy housing across the UK industry — AHDB and the AFBI in Northern Ireland have both published on this.

What's the recommended fall? +

A 2% fall (1 in 50) along the run is the standard recommendation — enough to keep sand moving, gentle enough that the channel floor does not need stepping. On longer runs we will sometimes go to 1.5% over the first third and 2.5% over the last two thirds to compensate for the higher solids load near the reception pit. The install drawing we issue with delivery shows the falls for your specific shed layout.

How does it pair with the diagonal slats? +

The 3 Metre Diagonal Slats are cast specifically to span the V-Section channels — same 1180mm (3ft10in) width on the channel, same lifting-eye locations, same C40/50 SR mix. The diagonal pattern self-cleans as cattle walk and the gaps are sized to AHDB recommendations. Heavy-duty slats are available if you want to drive a feeder wagon over them. The slats from this range are interchangeable with our 8' diagonal slats from the standard slurry channel range, so you can run a mixed shed off common slat stock.

Lead time? +

Standard V-section channels and matching 3m slats from catalogue ship in 3 to 5 weeks from order confirmation. The longer lead vs standard slurry channels is because the V-mould sees less use — we cast to order rather than from stock. Spring and autumn are our busiest seasons, so plan accordingly. We deliver on our own HIAB fleet across the South West same-week, and on planned UK runs in 2 to 3 weeks once the units are cast.

Can you fit this around an existing parlour layout? +

Yes — that is the bulk of our work. Send us a sketch or a survey of the existing slab, parlour pit, return passage and feed face, and we will set out the channel run and slat geometry to suit. The channels come in 1180×1180×2950mm (3ft10in × 3ft10in × 9ft8in) units, and the shallow variant (600mm/2ft height) is useful where a 2950mm (9ft8in) full-depth channel will not clear an existing foundation. Bespoke channel depths quoted on request.
