What is precast heelstone coping?

Precast heelstone coping kerbs at 3,000 × 240 × 230 mm (9'10"×9in×9in), weighing 210 kg (463 lb) per unit, cast in C40/50 sulphate-resisting concrete to BS 5502-22 and BS 8500-1:2023. Eliminates on-site shutter forming for sand-bedded cubicle rows with cast-in lifting eyes and anchor holes pre-formed. Catalogue lead time 1–2 weeks; bespoke lengths and non-standard fixings to spec.

What does the heelstone do? +

The heelstone is the precast kerb that runs along the rear edge of the cubicle bed — between the slatted floor (or scrape passage) and the bedding surface. It does three jobs: it stops bedding (mat, mattress, sand or sawdust) being kicked out into the slurry, it gives the cow a clean square edge to step over so her heels don't catch, and it anchors the rear cubicle frame. Get the height wrong and you get heel injuries; get the line wrong and the cow lies skewed. Our 3000×240×230mm (9'10"×9in×9in) units cast it square, true and to the same C40/50 spec as the bed.

How does the screeding lip work? +

The optional 50×50mm (2×2in) front lip is a small upstand cast onto the leading edge of the heelstone. When you screed the cubicle bed concrete behind it, the lip becomes the formwork — you screed the bed level off the top of the lip, get a clean joint, and end up with a slightly raised front edge that helps grip bedding mortar. It is a five-pound feature that saves an hour of timber shuttering on every cubicle row. Specify it at order time; the standard heelstone ships without.

Can I use existing cubicle frames? +

Usually yes. The cast-in anchor and joining-pin holes accept the standard UK cubicle frame fixings (cantilever and through-bolt patterns), and the 230mm (9in) height matches the AHDB recommendation for the rear-of-bed step. Send us a photo of the existing frame foot or the manufacturer drawing and we will confirm before you order — there are a couple of older Wilson and Mayo patterns that need a packer plate, and we cast those to spec on the same lead time.

What concrete grade? +

C40/50 sulphate-resisting to BS 8500-1:2023, mix designed for the dairy environment — same spec as the matching 4-metre cubicle base. The dairy slurry environment is XA2/XA3 chemically aggressive, so a sulphate-resisting cement is the right call. We do not use a "general purpose" mix on heelstones — they are right at the splash line and would not stand up to it.

Lead time? +

1 to 2 weeks from order confirmation for catalogue heelstones — they are a quick-turn product because the mould is set up most weeks. Bespoke lengths or non-standard fixing patterns run 2 to 3 weeks. We deliver on our own HIAB fleet across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset same-week, and on planned UK runs in 2 weeks once the units are cast.
