King Post Retaining Wall Systems — Devon Manufacturer.
UC posts and infill, sized to your surcharge.
A king post retaining wall is built from steel UC posts driven or socketed at fixed centres with precast concrete panels slotted between. WCCP supplies the panel infill — 80, 100, 150 or 180 mm (3in, 4in, 6in or 7in) thick — sized to your post centres and surcharge.
King-post retaining walls — UB/UC steel posts socketed into pad foundations at 2.4m (7'10") centres, with prestressed concrete infill panels stacked between. Heights to 6.0m (19'8"), surcharge ratings up to 60 kN/m² with the right post and footing, including HA traffic loading (LM1). Designed to BS EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2) and BS EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) for the steelwork. Lead time 3-5 weeks.

How does a king-post wall work? +
Steel UB or UC posts are set into pre-cast concrete pockets in a strip footing, typically 2.4m (7'10") centres. Prestressed concrete panels slide down the post web from the top, locking into channel formed by the post flanges. The result is a fast-build, highly engineered retaining wall with the post taking the bending and the panels carrying the lateral pressure.
What surcharge can I run? +
Up to 60 kN/m² with a 254×254 UC73 post on a 1.2m (3'11") strip footing — that covers HA traffic loading (LM1) and most civils applications. Lighter loadings use smaller posts; we size each scheme to the loading.
How fast does it go up? +
Once the footings are cured, a four-man crew with a 35-tonne (77,161 lb) crane will set 30–40 panels a day. A 50-metre (~164ft) run of 4.5m (14'9") wall typically goes up in three days. Faster than cast-in-situ by a long way.
Do you supply the posts? +
Yes — supply-only or with the panels as a package. We cut, drill, paint and ship to site to the same lead time as the panels. Galvanised finish available.
What about settlement and heave? +
The strip footing is designed for the bearing of the host ground; on poor ground we will recommend a wider footing or a piled solution. Free advice on the foundation design from our in-house team — send us the soil report.
