When should you choose a king post wall?

King post walls win where retained height is between 1.8m (5'11") and 4m (13'1"), where the toe is constrained, and where speed of install matters more than absolute material economy. They are routine on highway widening, basement perimeters, farm-track cuttings and any job where an L-block would need too much footprint.

Compared with a cast in-situ cantilever wall, king post is faster — once the piles are in, the panels drop in over a few days. Compared with sheet piling, it is more permanent and reads as a finished wall. Compared with gabions, it has the structural and visual properties that planners prefer in a development setting.

Where it loses: in very tall retained heights (above 4m (13'1"), contiguous bored pile or anchored designs typically dominate) or where the ground will not take a piled foundation (running sand, deep soft alluvium). Talk to us early on borderline jobs.

How are king post UC sections sized?

UC sizing is an engineer's calculation against retained height, soil shear strength, surcharge, groundwater and embedment depth — typically 1.5× the retained height for cohesive soils and 1.7× for granular. A typical 3m (9'10") retained height with no vehicle surcharge in a stiff clay sites at UC203×203×46 at 1.8m (5'11") centres, embedded 4.5m (14'9") into a 600mm (2ft) bored pile.

The maths is straightforward but unforgiving. The post is designed as a propped or free-standing cantilever depending on whether there is a top capping beam or anchor. Bending moment scales with the cube of retained height; shear with the square. Doubling the height does not double the section — it roughly multiplies it sevenfold.

What thickness should the infill panels be?

For 1.8m (5'11") post centres, 140mm (6in) panels suit retained heights to 2.4m (7'10"), 180mm (7in) to 3.0m (9'10"), 200–230mm (8–9in) to 3.6m (11'10"), and above 3.6m (11'10") the design becomes site-specific. Wider post centres demand thicker panels — span between posts and panel thickness scale roughly together.

How do you drain a king post wall?

Every king post wall needs a 150mm (6in) perforated land drain at the base of the retained face, wrapped in geotextile, surrounded by 200mm (8in) of clean 20mm (¾in) aggregate, with weep holes through every third panel at low level. Hydrostatic pressure behind a blocked wall doubles the design earth pressure. Drainage is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.

Above the drain we specify a clean granular backfill or no-fines concrete to within 300mm (1ft) of finished level, with the granular cap topped by a low-permeability cohesive layer to shed surface water away from the retained face.

Design to BS EN 1992 and BS EN 1993.

UK king-post walls are designed to BS EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2) for the concrete elements (piles, panels, capping beam) and BS EN 1993-1-1 (Eurocode 3) for the steel UC. Earth pressures follow BS EN 1997-1 (Eurocode 7) and BS 8002. BS 8500-1:2023 governs concrete specification — typically C40/50 with exposure class XC2 / XC3.

Install sequence — typical week.

  1. Set out and bore piles to design depth (usually 1.5–1.7× retained height).
  2. Drop UC king posts into wet pile concrete; brace plumb until the pile sets.
  3. Excavate retained face down in 1m (3'3") lifts, dropping panels as you go.
  4. Land each panel into the UC flanges; spacers maintain joint width for the sealant.
  5. Install drainage and granular backfill behind each lift before excavating the next.
  6. Cast capping beam if the design calls for one; commission and snag.

On a typical 30m (98'5") run at 3m (9'10") retained height, allow a week for piles, three days for posts to cure and brace, and two to three days to drop the panels and backfill.

Common mistakes on king post jobs.

  • Skipping the drainage. The single biggest cause of king-post failures. Hydrostatic load can double the design earth pressure overnight in heavy rain.
  • Wrong embedment depth. Embedment is sized by the engineer, not by rule of thumb. Short piles overturn — usually within five years of build.
  • Vehicle surcharge ignored. If a tractor or HGV will run within 1.5m (4'11") of the top of wall, the design has to allow for it. Tell us at design stage.
  • Joint sealant skipped. Sealant between panels is what stops fines piping out through the wall. It's a cheap line item — don't value-engineer it away.
  • Wrong concrete grade. C32/40 is not appropriate for retained-earth duty in our climate. We cast every panel in C40/50 to BS 8500-1:2023.
