What are the four main retaining wall systems?
King-post (steel UC sections in concrete sockets, infilled with precast panels), L-block (precast L-shaped gravity units sat on a granular base), cantilever (vertical stem with heel and toe, reinforced concrete, in-situ or precast), and panel-and-post (precast posts and panels for boundary, courtyard and yard walls). Each has a sweet spot of height, run length and surcharge.
All four are designed to BS EN 1997-1 (Eurocode 7) for geotechnical actions and BS EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2) for the concrete elements. Steel posts are designed to BS EN 1993-1-1 (Eurocode 3). The choice between them is a cost-benefit calculation, not a structural one — any of the four can be designed to meet the loads, the question is which fits the site.

King-post walls
King-post is a hybrid steel-and-concrete system: vertical steel UC sections embedded in augered concrete sockets at 1.5–2.5m (4'11"–8'2") centres, with horizontal precast panels dropped into the post flanges. The posts cantilever from the socket and take the bending moment; panels span between posts and take the lateral pressure.
Sweet spot: retained heights 1.5m (4'11") to 6m (19'8"), runs over 30m (98'5"), light to medium surcharge. Cheapest per linear metre on long runs and reasonably tall walls. Posts scale from 152×152 UC23 at 2m (6'7") to 305×305 UC97 at 6m (19'8"). Panels are typically 150–250mm (6in–10in) thick C40/50 depending on retained height and span.
Common applications: agricultural cuttings, embankment retention, flood walls, civils level-changes, working farm yards. Needs auger or post-driving rig access — if the line is unreachable for plant, L-block or panel-and-post fits better.
L-block walls
L-blocks are precast L-shaped gravity units that sit on a compacted granular base. The retained material on the horizontal heel of the L provides the resisting moment — the weight of the soil itself stabilises the block. No driven posts, no socket pours, no cure time before backfill.
Sweet spot: retained heights up to 4m (13'1"), run lengths under 30m (98'5"), sites where speed matters or where the wall may be relocated. Standard sizes run 5,000mm (16'5") × 2,400mm (7'10") × 250mm (10in) (with larger and smaller blocks available). Gravity-stable on placement — install rate is limited by crane lift cycles, not concrete cure.
Common applications: silage clamp walls, push walls, bunker bays, temporary retention, grain stores. The base is deceptively simple but unforgiving — any soft spots cause settlement and the block leans. We recommend a 200mm (8in) compacted Type 1 layer over a geotextile separation membrane.
Cantilever walls
A cantilever retaining wall is a reinforced concrete structure with a vertical stem, a heel slab and a toe. The weight of retained earth on the heel resists overturning. Cantilever walls suit retained heights of 3–8m (9'10"–26'3") and the highest surcharge tolerance — HGV loading, highway loading, building above the wall.
Sweet spot: heavy surcharge, very tall walls, structures that double as building or basement walls, sites where a smooth face matters (no visible posts). Usually in-situ poured for taller walls, though precast cantilever sections are available for modular schemes — precast cuts install time from weeks to days.
Common applications: HGV-loaded yard walls, basement walls, highway retention, multi-storey building edge walls, very tall walls (5m+ / 16'5"+). Foundation is a designed RC strip or pad to BS EN 1997-1, depth and width sized to the specific soil bearing capacity.
Panel-and-post walls
Panel-and-post is a fully precast system — slotted concrete posts at fixed centres with horizontal precast panels dropped between them. It suits boundary walls, courtyard walls, yard division and lower-load retention up to about 2.5m (8'2"). Faster than king-post on shorter runs and gives a clean precast finish on both faces.
Sweet spot: boundary and courtyard walls, yard subdivision, lower-load retention, sites where a clean architectural finish is needed on both faces. Foundations are typically a shallow pad or strip footing matched to post spacing — far simpler than king-post sockets.
Common applications: farmyard divisions, equestrian arenas, industrial estate boundaries, biomass and AD plant compounds, sound-attenuating boundary walls. Not the right system where heavy vehicle surcharge or high retained heights are in play — for those, king-post or cantilever wins.
What is the maximum height for each system?
King-post: up to 6m (19'8") (with 305×305 UC97 posts and 200mm (8in) panels). L-block: up to 4m (13'1") for a 5,000mm (16'5") × 2,400mm (7'10") × 250mm (10in) gravity unit, with anything taller requiring rear tie-back or counterforts. Cantilever: 3–8m (9'10"–26'3") as standard, with counterfort designs going to 10m+ (32'10"+) for highway and rail applications. Panel-and-post: up to about 2.5m (8'2") for boundary and yard duty.
Above each system's headline limit, you can engineer a solution but you start losing the sweet spot. A 7m (23'0") king-post wall would need 356×406 UC340 sections embedded 4m (13'1") deep — at that point a counterfort cantilever is more economical and faster.
For most farm and civils jobs, retained heights are 1.5–4m (4'11"–13'1"), which is exactly the band where king-post and L-block compete and cantilever is overkill.
What foundation does each system need?
King-post: 600–1,200mm (2'0"–3'11") diameter sockets at 1.5–2.5m (4'11"–8'2") centres, depth typically equal to retained height. L-block: 200mm (8in) Type 1 sub-base on undisturbed firm ground, blinded with 50mm (2in) sharp sand. Cantilever: designed RC strip or pad to BS EN 1997-1, depth and width sized to soil bearing capacity. Panel-and-post: shallow pad or strip foundation sized to post spacing.
King-post sockets are usually augered, with a steel UC dropped in and concrete poured around it (C32/40 mass concrete is standard). The post acts as a vertical cantilever embedded in the socket — the socket itself takes the moment.
L-block foundations are deceptively simple but unforgiving. The base must be flat, level and structurally competent. Panel-and-post foundations are typically a continuous strip or individual pads at post centres — quicker to dig and pour than king-post sockets.
How long does each system take to install?
For a 50m (164ft) run at 3m (9'10") retained height: king-post takes 5–7 working days including socket pours and 7-day cure. L-block takes 2–3 days once the base is prepared. In-situ cantilever takes 3–4 weeks for forming, reinforcement, pour and 28-day cure. Precast cantilever drops cantilever time to 7–10 days. Panel-and-post boundary walls install in 2–4 days for a 50m (164ft) run.
L-blocks are the fastest because the units are gravity-stable on placement — there's no cure time before backfill can start. King-post installs are limited by socket cure (we recommend 7 days before panel infilling for 3m+ (9'10"+) heights). Cantilever is slowest because of formwork, rebar fix and cure.
Programme certainty matters when access is constrained or weather is tight. L-block and panel-and-post are the lowest-risk options for a fixed-window install.
What surcharge can each system take?
Standard king-post: 10 kN/m² (light vehicles). Standard L-block: 5–10 kN/m² depending on size. Cantilever: designed to spec, typically 30 kN/m² for HGV access, 60 kN/m²+ for highway and yard applications. Panel-and-post for boundary duty: low surcharge only, designed case by case for any retention duty. Surcharge is live load on the retained material from vehicles, stockpiles or buildings near the wall.
Surcharge is often the deciding factor. A king-post wall holding back a bank with no traffic above is straightforward. A king-post wall holding back a yard with daily HGV traffic at 30 kN/m² needs much heavier posts and panels — at which point a cantilever becomes structurally appropriate.
Always tell us the surcharge case at design stage — vehicle type, frequency, distance from wall, stockpile heights. Designing for actual loads is cheaper than rebuilding for them later.
When should I use each system?
Use king-post for runs over 30m (98'5") at heights 1.5–6m (4'11"–19'8") with light to medium surcharge. Use L-block for short runs (under 30m (98'5")), where speed matters, or where the wall may be relocated. Use cantilever for heavy surcharge, very tall walls, or where aesthetics matter (smooth face, no visible posts). Use panel-and-post for boundary and courtyard walls up to 2.5m (8'2").
