How thick should a UK slurry store wall be?

Direct answer: UK slurry store walls are typically 200mm (8in) thick precast panels for retained slurry up to 2.4m (7'10") deep, 250mm (10in) for up to 3m (9'10"), and 300mm (1ft) for 3.5m (11'6") and above. What does SSAFO 2018 require for slurry store walls?

SSAFO 2018 — the Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil (England) Regulations 2018 — requires every new or substantially altered slurry store to have a 20-year minimum design life, be structurally adequate to BS 5502-50 and BS EN 1992-3, and be impermeable to slurry. You must also give the Environment Agency 14 days' written notice before construction.

The regulations don't prescribe a wall thickness. They prescribe the outcome: the wall has to stand up to 20 years of hydrostatic pressure, agitator loads, vehicle impact at the parapet, freeze-thaw cycles and the chemistry of the slurry itself, without leaking. Thickness is the engineer's answer to those forces.

In practice, every precast panel we supply for slurry duty is designed by a structural engineer against the specific retained height, the soil and groundwater conditions, and the post or buttress spacing. The numbers in the table below are typical — your job will be designed to match. The same design discipline applies across the agricultural range — slurry channels and silage clamp walls cast to the same C40/50 SR mix.

What wall thickness do I need for a given slurry depth?

For retained slurry depths up to 2.4m (7'10"), 200mm (8in) precast panels are standard. For 2.4m to 3m (7'10"–9'10"), step up to 250mm (10in). For 3m to 3.5m (9'10"–11'6"), 300mm (1ft) panels with closer post spacing or increased reinforcement. Above 3.5m (11'6"), design becomes site-specific and a structural review is required. These figures assume a slurry density of 1,020 kg/m³ and standard post-and-panel construction with 1.8m (5'11") post centres.

200mm vs 250mm vs 300mm — which panel for which job?

200mm (8in) panels suit smaller dairy and beef stores up to about 1,500m³ (about 53,000 cu ft). 250mm (10in) covers most modern dairy units up to 3,000m³ (about 106,000 cu ft). 300mm (1ft) is for high-capacity stores, deep below-grade tanks and any job where vehicle access runs close to the parapet. The decision is rarely just about depth — it's about installed cost, agitator size and how close the tractor will get.

What concrete grade and cement should slurry walls use?

C40/50 sulphate-resisting concrete is the standard for UK slurry storage. That means a characteristic cylinder strength of 40 MPa, cube strength of 50 MPa, and a cement blend with low tricalcium aluminate — typically CEM III/B (ground granulated blastfurnace slag) or CEM IV (pozzolanic). It's specified to BS 8500-1 exposure class XA2 or XA3.

Slurry attacks ordinary Portland cement through two mechanisms. Hydrogen sulphide produced by anaerobic digestion oxidises to sulphuric acid at the slurry-air interface and dissolves the cement paste. Sulphate ions in the slurry react with C3A in the cement to form ettringite, which expands and cracks the matrix. Sulphate-resisting blends defeat both.

We cast every slurry panel in C40/50 SR as standard. Grades below C40/50 are not appropriate for slurry duty regardless of how thick the wall is — thickness compensates for structural load, not chemistry.

How much reinforcement and cover do slurry walls need?

Slurry walls need 50mm (2in) minimum cover on the slurry-facing face and 40mm (1½in) on the air face, with reinforcement designed to BS EN 1992-1-1 and BS EN 1992-3. For a 200mm (8in) panel that typically means a single mat of B500B mesh at A393 or heavier; for 250mm (10in) and above, twin mats with bar diameter and spacing tuned to the design moment.

Cover matters more than people think. The Environment Agency's most common reason for failing inspection on a slurry tank isn't structural — it's spalling caused by carbonation and chloride ingress on under-covered rebar. Once the bar starts to rust, it expands seven-fold and pops the cover off. Sufficient cover, properly compacted concrete and a tight crack-width limit (we design to 0.2mm) keep the matrix sound.

Joints between panels are sealed with hydrophilic waterstop and a polysulphide or polyurethane sealant rated for slurry exposure. The waterstop swells on contact with moisture and self-heals minor movement.

What are the most common mistakes on slurry store builds?

The four mistakes we see most often: under-spec'd concrete (using C32/40 or non-sulphate-resisting), inadequate cover at joints, no allowance for vehicle surcharge at the parapet, and skipping the 14-day Environment Agency notice. Any one of those can fail an inspection or shorten the life of the asset by a decade.

  • Wrong concrete grade. C32/40 is fine for a yard slab, not for slurry. Specify C40/50 SR every time.
  • Joint leakage. Panels are only as good as the waterstop between them. Skipping or skimping on joint detail is the most common source of leaks.
  • Surcharge at the parapet. If a tractor or muck spreader will run within 1.5m (4'11") of the wall, the design has to account for it. Tell us at design stage, not after pour.
  • No EA notice. WQE1 needs 14 days. Submit it before you break ground or you risk a stop notice.
  • Insufficient capacity. SIG 2026 requires 6 months' storage. Design to capacity, not to budget.

What is the minimum legal wall thickness for a UK slurry store?

There is no single minimum thickness in law. SSAFO 2018 requires a 20-year design life and structural adequacy to BS 5502-50 and BS EN 1992-3. In practice that means 200mm (8in) precast panels for retained heights up to about 2.4m (7ft10in), 250mm (10in) for 3m (9ft10in), and 300mm (1ft) for 3.5m (11ft6in) and above.

Do I need to notify the Environment Agency before building a new slurry store?

Yes. Under SSAFO 2018 you must give the Environment Agency at least 14 days written notice before constructing, substantially enlarging or substantially reconstructing a slurry store. Use form WQE1. The EA can inspect during and after the build.

What concrete grade should slurry store walls be?

C40/50 with sulphate-resisting cement (typically CEM III/B or CEM IV with low C3A) is the standard. Slurry contains hydrogen sulphide and ammonia which attack ordinary Portland cement. Cover to reinforcement should be 50mm (2in) minimum on the slurry-facing side.

How long should a slurry store last?

SSAFO 2018 specifies a 20-year minimum design life with reasonable maintenance. Properly cast precast panels with adequate cover and a sulphate-resisting mix routinely outlast that — we have stores from the 1980s still in service across Devon and Cornwall.

Can I build a circular concrete slurry store?

Yes. Circular stores in hoop-tensioned precast or in-situ slip-formed concrete are common above 2,000m³ (about 70,600 cu ft) capacity because the geometry resists hydrostatic pressure efficiently. Below that capacity, rectangular precast panel stores are usually cheaper and quicker to install.

What capacity do I need for the Slurry Infrastructure Grant 2026?

The Slurry Infrastructure Grant Round 4 (closing 30 September 2026, £74m fund) requires you to demonstrate at least 6 months of slurry storage capacity post-build. Capacity is calculated against your livestock numbers using the AHDB slurry calculator.

Do precast slurry walls need an internal liner or coating?

Not if the concrete is correctly specified. A C40/50 sulphate-resisting mix with 50mm (2in) cover does not need an internal coating for slurry duty. Coatings are sometimes used at the slurry/air interface where carbonation accelerates wear, but they are optional.
